American author and radio host Stephen Lendman has said that US President Donald Trump should have been charged with serious offences like crimes of war against humanity if Democrats really wanted to impeach him.
Trump celebrated his acquittal on impeachment charges on Thursday with a pair of caustic, free-wheeling speeches that drew on White House pomp and the solemnity of an annual prayer breakfast to underscore the fact that he remained in office.
After walking down a red carpet to a standing ovation from scores of Republican lawmakers, administration officials and conservative media figures in the East Room of the White House, Trump re-aired old grievances and accused Democrats of staging a "corrupt" effort to undermine his presidency in a speech lasting more than an hour.
"Ive done things wrong in my life, I will admit ... but this is what the end result is," Trump said, holding up a copy of the Washington Post with the headline "Trump acquitted."
The Republican president then handed the newspaper to his wife, Melania, and said maybe they would frame it.
Lendman said, "The undemocratic Dems have ever forgiven Trump for winning an election he was supposed to leave. So the idea behind election was to go after him and weaken him, hoping that the Dems can retake the White House, and they already control the House, and they aim to retake the Senate. The Republicans control it right now. This is what the impeachment business is all about."
"The charges against Trump are very weak, and really dont hold water. If they wanted to impeach him and remove him from office, they (Democrats) could have charge him with real offences, serious offences - crimes of war against humanity, breach of the public trust, Syria lying. These are serious offense. The Syria lying is a dubious impeachable offence," he told Press TV.
